Korean Reading Practice

Korean Reading Practice – Beginner Level

Hello there! 🙂 Today, we dive into our first Korean reading practice.

This text is aimed at beginners, but not complete beginners. So don’t feel discouraged if you can’t understand it easily if you’ve just started learning Korean : it’s completely normal. If you’re looking for a reading practice for lower beginners, check out this one or check all the reading practices.

In this article, you will find :

  • A short text or story written in Korean
  • An audio file of the text
  • A translation of the text
  • A vocabulary list
  • A short explanation of the most difficult grammar parts if necessary
  • A few questions to review your understanding of the text
Note – Credits

When we do not write the texts ourselves, we give credits where credits are due. Links marked with * are affiliate links, and we will earn a small commission at no extra cost to you. It will help support the blog, so thank you. 🙂

You can find this text and more in the book Ewha 2-1*, one of my favorite Korean textbook series for self-study. It is made by Ewha Womans University! I highly recommend it if you’re studying on your own and want a textbook.

My Classmates

My name is Michael, and I’m taking Korean level 2 classes. I’m from the United States.

My occupation is a company employee, and it has been one year since I came to Korea. I’m going to introduce my classmates now.

My classmates come from China, Japan, Russia, the Netherlands, Vietnam, and the United States.

Jangsoi, who is from China, sings Korean songs and dances well. He’s our class singer.

Ichiro is from Japan. He works as a journalist at NHK and plays the guitar very well.

Natasha is from Russia. She is a housewife. Her husband is not Russian but Korean.

Yan is from the Netherlands. He studies Asian history at a university in the Netherlands. Jan is tall and handsome, so he’s very popular among our female classmates.

Hai Anh is from Vietnam. She lives in the school dormitory. But she comes late more than Jangsoi who lives far, so she’s called the “Latecomer Leader”.

Our classmates study hard and help each other well. We also eat together and do homework together after class. That’s why I like our classmates. Having good friends makes school life enjoyable.

Study Method for Texts

If you’re not familiar with text study, here’s a method I would suggest you try.

To study this text, start by reading it from beginning to end once without paying too much attention to whether you understand fully or not. Then, listen to the audio file and read along.

You can press pause as many times as needed.

During your second read, try to understand as much as possible. If you can’t understand some of the words, check their meaning as well.

When you finish your second read, ensure you understood the story/text correctly. Read a third time (with or without audio). It’s even better if you read it out loud: it will improve your speech fluency over time.

You can then try answering the questions asked at the end!
